It has been reported to us that North Lincolnshire council have been fined when a fault with a horizontal swing barrier lead to the fatality of a man at a local sports field. Andrew Matthews, aged 51 had been driving forward (similar to the barrier pictured within) when a fault in the barriers operation caused it to fall onto his windscreen, hitting his head. Mr Matthews sadly died from his injuries. The court determined with the evidence of HSE Inspector Chris Gallagher, that this incident could have been avoided had the barrier been properly maintained. DHF have advised that an incident has occurred recently involving a powered gate that resulted in serious injury for a teen, when a powered gate fell upon them. The gate had been previously reported in faulty condition by a DHF member, and encouraged the owner of the gate to ensure that safety measures where properly met. This same DHF member also rightly refused to work upon the gate until they had agreed to meet these measures. It transpires that another company had acted against guidelines and repaired the gate without addressing these issues, which inevitably has led to this accident...
